Gananoque is an Indian name, which when translated means "the place of health" or "the place where water ran over the rocks".

In the spring, Indians used to make their way down the Gananoque River to the St. Lawrence River where they found fresh air and clean water.

Gananoque and area history

Gananoque has a long history of involvement with its American neighbours to the south, from its founding to its involvement in the War of 1812 when an American raid on Gananoque led to several casualties, and the destruction of the King Street bridge over the Gananoque River. Since then our relationship has been must friendlier.

Gananoque was incorporated as a village in 1864, and as a town on January 1, 1890.
